Exploring the idea further would be good to generate the Timeline keyframes based on Selected tasks and an option for tasks with assignments (image below to ilustrate).
Please have a think about as this would help us massively.

Here is the proposed implementation.
Instead of making GUI changes as proposed, how about always generating timeline based on the selected Tasks? As this is based on the selected Tasks always, as long as your selected Tasks takes (has 3D assignments = TRUE) into consideration, it also works.
This means that when there are Tasks selected in the Task table, generate timeline will set both start/ dates to manual.
Start time set to the start of the earliest Task among all selected Tasks.
End time set to the finish time of the latest Task among all selected Tasks.
